WordPress blog basics for beginners

Introduction

Blogging is a fun. In the open internet era of blogosphere anybody can be a blogger. There is no professional experience required to have a personal blog. But one who want to make money, provide quality technical information should follow the general rules applicable to blogosphere. Blog is the expanded form of web log and it maintains chronological data in multiple range of topics. Let us see in detail.

A blog should have rich content maintained in reverse chronological order. A blog should have maintained with older articles, a place to have feedback from customer end, unique but relevant related links underneath the post and RSS feeds.

The Blog Content

Content is the ultimate ruler of any web page. A single author or multiple authors can manage a blog. Depends upon the nature of blog, blog contents need to be updated on periodical basis. For instance, news blog need to be updated on instant basis. There are options available to authors to write the content offline and upload them whenever it found effective.

Comments

One can be a professional blogger by means of the feedback only. Comments section can be provided in any web page that will help to improve the appearance, quality, content of any page. Even users do not need to login and provide the comments. But they can do it from pingbacks or trackbags as well.

The Difference Between a Blog and CMS

CMS is nothing but content management system and it differs from blog in many ways. Because authors need to write the content alone and blogging tool take care of the rest of the things. WordPress is an excellent blogging tool in that aspect. Simply author need to compose a blog and publish over the internet. WordPress takes the content as it is and the rest is totally made by wordpress tool i.e. making the text look beautiful, making the html code content adhering to web standards.

Archives

Archiving is getting done easily by blogs. WordPress tool maintains the list of blogs in datewise format. Hence one can categorize a blog month wise, year wise, author wise, technology wise etc., Even customization option is also available to enable archived blogging in different pattern. Ultimate aim is to make visitors to get all the information from one blog. These features popularize a blog as well.

Feeds

To sustain in blogosphere, frequent update of content is necessary. A Feed makes the visitors to get new content and update the site with comments. Users eventually view the updated content and post their comments in same or different site. Feeds are in the form of Rich Site summary (RSS) or Atom or RDF files.

Blogrolls

A blogroll is a way to get access to other pages of similar category. This makes the blogs more valuable one as in one spot the users getting all kind of information. Blogroll is a sidebar on the page and in wordpress already it is available and hence authors no need to depend on third party to create a blogroll.

Managing Comments

Trackbacks and pingbacks are necessary for any blog. They are nothing but providing comments to the post, link the post, comment the post and recommend it to others. Customization feature is available for managing comments section.

Trackbacks

Trackbacks are nothing but informing to other user about reading the owner’s content or refer any other content for further reference. Internally it is a messaging mechanism between bloggers. Mutual benefit is shared between bloggers using trackbacks.

Pingbacks

Pingbacks are somewhat equivalent to trackbacks only. But there are certain differences as well.

There are three significant differences between pingbacks and trackbacks.

Pingbacks use XML-RPC technology while trackbacks use HTTP POST technology. Via Pingbacks, no content is sent and in one way we can say that pingbacks is for remote comments. Pingbacks are authenticatable and hence security wise it is good but sometimes annoying.

Verifying Pingbacks and Trackbacks

For blog commenting, both trackbacks and pingbacks are responsible for authorizing comments.

Comment Moderation, comment spam

WordPress includes many tools for fighting against Comment Spam. Comment spam is a manageable one only and hence authors no need to worry about the comment section of the blog.

Conclusion

Beginner should have in mind that content should be rich enough and periodically should get updated. Unless required, one should not use subscribe or vote me links in the front page. Blogosphere is vast and hence one can gain rich friend circle with same interest just by reading their blogs, providing worthy comments and get a backlinks from their site.
